Lichens are everywhere - those grayish, greenish, occasionally orange splotches on tree limbs, boulders, and stone walls that brighten in wet weather. These symbiotic colonies of fungus and algae are pioneer organisms, growing in the most extreme conditions. Learn to recognize some of the most common of the 1,200 species found in New England.
